The Gears
A speedway bike has no gears ie. 1-5 gears like most motorcycles.
How a speedway bike is geared is through the back sprocket. Most speedway riders have sprockets ranging from 63 teeth to 54 teeth. A rider will arrive at a meet, assess the size and condition of the track and will change the sprocket accordingly. It is possible that a rider will change a sprocket for every heat. This is not difficult as the riders have various links and the sprocket is only attached by 3 nuts on the back wheel to ensure minimal time to change during a meet (can take approx. 1 minute to perform a sprocket change) . Riders have been known to change gearing after the 2 minute announcement!
