The Engines

There are 2 types of Engines in speedway

GM

And Jawa

Speedway bikes use a 500 cc single cylinder engine capable of reaching 0-60 in 3 seconds, no brakes, no gears,running on pure alcohol but not of the Stella variety this is a methanol fuel and they do approx 5 miles per gallon! Ie. £15 per gallon !! not cheap!!

They have approximately 80+ bhp and these engines run upto 11,000 + revs and when they go bang they certainly go bang!.

The Magic Box Ignition System

Speedway engines run with a electronic ignition system commonly known in speedway as the Interspan ‘magic box’, costing in the region of upto £500. It can be advanced and retarded in between each heat.
